Moustache Mardi 27.4

The Mardi is Moustache’s comfort commuter — the upright, step-through city bike that adds a suspension fork and adjustable stem to smooth out the rough side of London riding. The 27.4 is the low-maintenance heart of the range: a Bosch 75 Nm Performance Line motor, a Shimano hub gear you can shift at a standstill, and a Gates carbon belt in place of a chain — so there’s nothing to oil and little to think about.

Comfort, with nothing to oil

The 27.4 is built for riders who want a calm, capable commute and as little upkeep as possible. The front suspension fork and suspension seatpost take the sting out of cobbles and cracked tarmac; the wide Super Moto-X tyres add cushioning; and the adjustable stem lets you set the riding position to suit you. It’s comfort first, exactly as the Mardi intends.

The drivetrain is where it earns its keep. A Shimano hub gear shifts even when you’re stopped, so you never grind away from a standstill in the wrong gear, and a Gates carbon belt replaces the chain entirely — quiet, clean, and free of oiling or rust. Clip a child seat, panniers or a crate onto the MIK rack and it’s ready for the school run or the weekly shop.

Built for everyday London

The frame is Moustache’s hydroformed 6061 alloy with the Bosch PowerTube 625 Wh battery set low in the down tube. The Bosch Performance Line motor (75 Nm) runs the Smart System — eBike Flow app, adjustable assistance, on-screen navigation via the Purion 200 display. An SR Suntour fork with 80 mm of travel and a 40 mm suspension seatpost do the comfort work, topped with an Essenza+ saddle.

Shimano MT200 hydraulic disc brakes handle the stopping, integrated AXA lights run off the main battery, and Moustache’s tubular mudguards, a MIK HD / QL3 rear rack and an AXA Block XXL frame lock come as standard. Gears are a Shimano Nexus 5-speed hub paired with a Gates carbon belt.

A drivetrain you can forget about

The 27.4’s defining combination is a Shimano hub gear and a Gates carbon belt. The hub gear shifts while you’re stationary — click down at the lights, pull away smoothly — and its internals are sealed away from the weather and grime. The belt, in place of a chain, needs no oiling, won’t rust and won’t mark your trousers, and runs far longer between replacements.

Put together, it’s about as low-maintenance as a city bike gets while still giving you proper gears. On a bike ridden every day, through London winters, that’s the setup that keeps asking the least of you — no oily hands, fewer workshop visits, and one less thing to remember.

Which Mardi is right for you?

The Mardi comes in three trims on the comfort frame, with a full-suspension option above. The 27.2 is the way in. The 27.4 here settles on the low-maintenance belt with the same hub gear — the practical middle of the range. The 27.6 goes automatic, with an Enviolo hub that shifts for you. And the 27.4 FS adds a rear shock for genuinely rough roads. If you want hub-gear simplicity and a belt without automatic shifting, the 27.4 is the sweet spot. Come and ride it next to the 27.6 to feel the difference.

We ride these bikes ourselves, year-round, so the advice comes from the saddle, not a brochure. We’ll set the 27.4 up for your height, show you how the hub gear and belt work day to day, and let you take it out on real roads before you decide. FAQs

Does the Mardi 27.4 need much maintenance?

Very little. The Gates carbon belt needs no oiling, won’t rust and won’t mark your clothes, and the Shimano hub gear is sealed away from the weather — so there’s far less cleaning and adjusting than a chain-and-derailleur bike. Combined with regular servicing, it’s one of the easiest city e-bikes to live with day to day.

Can you change gear on the Mardi 27.4 while stopped?

Yes — the Shimano hub gear shifts while you’re stationary, so if you arrive at a junction in too high a gear you simply click down while you wait and pull away smoothly. It’s one of the reasons hub gears suit stop-start city traffic so well.

What is the difference between the Mardi 27.4 and 27.6?

Both are comfort commuters on the same frame, with front suspension and the 75 Nm Performance Line motor. The 27.4 has a Shimano hub gear you shift yourself; the 27.6 uses an Enviolo Automatiq hub that shifts automatically, so you never touch a gear at all. The 27.4 is the hands-on choice; the 27.6 is for anyone who’d rather not think about gears. Both run the same quiet Gates belt.

What is the difference between the Lundi and the Mardi?

Both are upright, step-through Moustache city bikes. The Lundi is rigid at the front and takes its comfort from the riding position and seatpost — ideal on reasonable roads. The Mardi adds a suspension fork and adjustable stem for rougher streets. If your routes are broken and bumpy, the Mardi is the calmer ride; if they’re mostly smooth, the Lundi is the more elegant choice.
