The Tern GSD is a compact electric family cargo bike built as a serious car-replacement. It can carry two children alongside shopping and school bags, all while still being similar in length to a regular bike.

With a 100kg rear rack limit and a 210kg maximum gross vehicle weight, front fork suspension, 20inch wheels, and epic power from the Bosch Cargo Line motor, the GSD is designed for families who need one bike to do a whole lot. The third-generation GSD

The current GSD is the third generation, launched in 2025 and redesigned throughout. A reinforced frame with larger-diameter hydroformed tubing, a longer wheelbase and a lower centre of gravity make it noticeably steadier when fully loaded — and lift the maximum gross vehicle weight to 210 kg, tested to the DIN 79010 cargo bike standard. The rear Atlas G Rack carries 100 kg, enough for two children or an adult passenger, and the reinforced Atlas Lockstand adds a wider stance and remote unlocking for steadier loading.

One of the more useful additions is the Stow Decks — Tern's patent-pending folding side decks. They lock at five different angles to serve as footrests for a passenger on the rear rack, or to support partially or fully loaded panniers and bulky cargo, then fold flat when they are not needed. On the previous generation the footboards were fixed into the frame; making them fold-out and adjustable is a small change that earns its keep on a bike that switches between passengers and cargo through the week.

How families actually use the Tern GSD

Tern GSD electric family bikes for 2 children

Two children and the school run

The GSD's real strength shows on a loaded school run. Two children comfortably on the back, coats, swimming kits, school bags and lunch boxes accounted for, and still enough room up front for extra luggage.

Safety and day-to-day confidence

The GSD feels stable, solid and properly purpose-built — and that is backed up by real testing. The frame and fork passed rigorous EFBE Prüftechnik stress testing to meet the DIN 79010 cargo bike safety standard at its 210 kg weight rating, and the Bosch motor, battery and charger are certified to UL 2849 for electrical and fire safety.

That matters on paper, but it matters just as much in the ride itself. A low centre of gravity, strong 4-piston disc brakes, a smooth suspension fork, a suspension seatpost and an adjustable stem all help the bike feel stable, comfortable and, most importantly, safe for you and your family.

The result is a compact cargo bike that feels reassuring in everyday use: loaded with children, moving through traffic, stopping in wet conditions, or being shared between different adults in the family.

Tern GSD Gen3 Bosch Cargo Line motor

Bosch Smart System and family-friendly tech

The GSD range is built around Bosch Cargo Line support, with up to 85 Nm of torque for carrying children, passengers and heavier loads. The higher-spec models add Bosch Smart System features that make the bike easier to live with day to day.

Features such as eBike Lock, eBike Alarm, GPS tracking, dual-battery compatibility, an always-on brake light and an ultra-bright headlight all help make the GSD feel more useful as everyday transport.

That means better built-in security, stronger lighting through darker months, and the option of more range when the bike is doing proper family work. Some models, including the GSD S10 and GSD R14, are also available with Bosch ABS for extra braking confidence in wet or emergency conditions.

FAQs

How many children can the Tern GSD carry?

The GSD is designed and tested to carry two children on the rear platform, with a 100 kg rear rack and a 210 kg maximum gross vehicle weight. It can also carry one adult and one child simultaneously, within those load limits. The right passenger setup — child seats, rails, footrests — depends on your children's ages and sizes. Come in and we will walk you through the options and make sure the configuration is correct before you ride.

What is the difference between the GSD P10, P00, S10 and R14?

All four share the same frame, Bosch Cargo Line motor (up to 85 Nm), 100 kg rear rack, and 210 kg maximum gross weight. The differences are in Bosch system, drivetrain, and extras.

The P10 uses Bosch eBike System 2 with a Shimano Deore derailleur — the most affordable entry point. The P00 adds the Bosch Smart System and swaps to an Enviolo stepless hub with Gates belt drive for lower maintenance. The S10 keeps the Shimano derailleur but adds Smart System, Bosch ABS, a Cane Creek suspension seatpost, and a USB-C port. The R14 is the top specification: Rohloff 14-speed electronic hub, Gates belt, Smart System, ABS, and all the S10 extras. If you are unsure which is right for you, a test ride back-to-back is the most useful next step.

Can the Tern GSD store in a London flat or narrow hallway?

Yes — vertical parking is one of the GSD's practical strengths. The tail end of the bike is designed to let it stand upright, taking up a footprint close to a potted plant. It fits in hallways, beside a wall, or inside a lift. At around 180 cm in horizontal length, it is meaningfully shorter than a traditional cargo bike, and when stored vertically it takes up less floor space than most buggies. If your home has a hallway wide enough to wheel a bike through, the GSD can almost certainly live there.

What is the Tern GSD warranty?

All Tern GSD bikes come with a 5-year warranty on the frame, fork, and handlepost as standard. Register for TernCare within 60 days of purchase and the warranty extends to 10 years — one of the longest in the industry for a cargo bike. Tern also guarantee the availability of replacement parts, including batteries, for a minimum of 7 years from the date of purchase. We will remind you to register and help you through it when you collect the bike from us.

Can I test ride the Tern GSD in London?

Yes — we have the GSD available to test ride at our London shops. We recommend booking in advance, and if you can bring the children along for a loaded test, even better — that is when the bike really makes sense. If you are also considering the HSD or the Quick Haul Long, we are happy to set up a back-to-back ride across all three. Find your nearest Flying Dutchman shop to get started.
