The Gen 3 Tern HSD P5i — compact carrying, cleaner belt-drive riding

The third-generation HSD P5i keeps the compact, one-passenger cargo platform and improves almost everything around it. A new Bosch UFI Performance Line motor (up to 75 Nm) is smoother, quieter and more efficient, while a longer wheelbase and lower centre of gravity make the bike noticeably more stable under load.

It now carries up to 190 kg gross vehicle weight and fits riders up to 205 cm and 130 kg, thanks to a taller Physis handlepost and a longer, stronger VLT seatpost. The P5i pairs all of this with low-maintenance internal hub gearing and a clean Gates belt drive, so it stays simple for everyday city riding, school runs and shared household use — and it still folds flat to store indoors or carry on a car, van or train.

Who the HSD P5i is for

The HSD P5i is the most straightforward of the three Gen 3 models — a familiar Shimano Nexus 5-speed hub gear rather than stepless or electronic shifting, paired with a Gates Carbon Drive belt that keeps maintenance to a minimum. If you want individual, predictable gear changes rather than a continuously variable feel, this is the one.

At 28.1 kg it is also the lightest bike in the Gen 3 HSD range, which shows up in everyday handling — lifting it up a kerb, wheeling it through a hallway, or getting it on and off a train platform. The same widened fit as the rest of the range applies, up to 200 cm and 130 kg, so it still works well shared across a household.

If you'd rather not shift gears at all, the P00's stepless Enviolo hub does that; if you want the strongest motor and wireless shifting, the S9i adds Bosch eShift and 90 Nm of torque. All three share the same 190 kg capacity.

Build & technology

The frame and fork are certified to EN 17860 at the P5i's full 190 kg gross vehicle weight, with the same longer wheelbase and lower centre of gravity as the rest of the Gen 3 range for steadier handling once loaded. A Suntour suspension fork with 32 mm stanchions takes the edge off rougher roads, and Magura hydraulic disc brakes on 180 mm rotors give confident stopping power, wet or dry.

The Shimano Nexus 5-speed hub gives five discrete, sealed gears rather than a stepless or electronic system — shift with the twist of a grip, with nothing exposed to the weather. It runs alongside a Gates Carbon Drive CDX belt, which needs no oiling or tensioning, and the Bosch Performance Line motor delivers up to 75 Nm of torque with 340% pedal assist.

The compact Bosch Purion 200 display keeps the cockpit uncluttered and connects to the Bosch eBike Flow app, and the PowerPack 545Wh battery gives a range of up to 107 km. The Atlas H rear rack is rated to 80 kg and ISO 11243:2023 certified, and the AXA frame lock is keyed alike with the battery.

HSD P5i accessories

The HSD accessory system — passenger seating, weather protection and everyday cargo — is built to work across the range, including the P5i. View the full Tern HSD Accessories collection for child seats, rain and sun protection, panniers and racks. Compatibility varies by model and generation, so check with us before ordering, or come in and we'll set the bike up around what you need to carry.

Not sure the P5i is right for you?

If you'd rather not shift gears at all, the P00's stepless Enviolo hub is worth comparing — same 190 kg capacity and rider fit, with continuously variable rather than stepped gearing. If you want the strongest motor and wireless shifting, look at the S9i. And if you're carrying two children rather than one, the Tern GSD or our HSD hub page are the better starting points.

At Flying Dutchman

The P5i tends to be the one we point families towards when they're weighing up their first cargo bike and don't want to overthink the drivetrain — familiar gears, low maintenance, and noticeably easy to manoeuvre thanks to the lighter frame. First UK stock is due in September; you can reserve one ahead of arrival and we'll let you know as soon as it's in.

Book a test ride at one of our London shops, or come in and we'll talk you through how it compares to the S9i and P00 in person.

Tern HSD P5i Gen 3 FAQs

What's the difference between the HSD P5i and the HSD P00?

Both use the same 75 Nm Bosch Performance Line motor, the same 190 kg maximum gross vehicle weight, and the same rider fit up to 200 cm and 130 kg. The difference is the hub. The P5i uses a Shimano Nexus 5-speed hub — five discrete gears you shift with a twist, with a familiar, stepped feel — paired with a Gates Carbon Drive belt. The P00 uses an Enviolo Heavy Duty stepless hub, which adjusts continuously rather than in steps. Both are sealed and low-maintenance; it comes down to whether you prefer stepped or stepless shifting. The P5i is also the lighter of the two, at 28.1 kg versus 28.9 kg.

Is the HSD P5i lighter than the other Gen 3 HSD models?

Yes — at 28.1 kg, the P5i is around 0.8 kg lighter than both the P00 and the S9i, which come in at 28.9 kg. It's a modest difference on paper, but it is noticeable in everyday handling: lifting the bike up a kerb, wheeling it through a narrow hallway, or manoeuvring it onto a train. If low weight matters more to you than electronic shifting or a stepless hub, the P5i is the one to start with.

Is the Shimano Nexus hub on the HSD P5i good for year-round riding in London?

Yes. The Nexus 5-speed hub is fully enclosed, so the gearing itself is protected from rain, road spray and grit — nothing is exposed the way it is on a derailleur system. Combined with the Gates Carbon Drive belt, which doesn't need oiling and won't rust, it's a drivetrain that's well suited to wet UK winters and daily use without much upkeep. See our HSD hub page for more on choosing between the Gen 3 models.
