The Gen 3 Tern HSD P00 — stepless, near-silent belt-drive riding

The Gen 3 HSD P00 brings the new HSD platform together with a stepless Enviolo hub and a clean Gates belt drive — no gears to click through and no chain to oil, just smooth, quiet, low-maintenance riding. The upgraded Bosch UFI Performance Line motor (up to 75 Nm) is smoother and more efficient, and a longer wheelbase with a lower centre of gravity adds stability when the bike is loaded.

Like the rest of the Gen 3 range it carries up to 190 kg gross vehicle weight, fits riders up to 205 cm and 130 kg, and still folds flat for storage and transport. It's the one-passenger HSD for riders who want the cleanest, most effortless everyday ride.

Who the HSD P00 is for

The HSD P00 is built for anyone who would rather not think about gears at all. Its Enviolo hub is stepless — no fixed number of speeds to select through, just a twist shifter that adjusts continuously to your pedalling speed — paired with a Gates Carbon Drive belt that never needs oiling or a new chain.

It suits households where more than one person rides the bike, especially if riding experience varies: there is no clutch timing or derailleur to learn, which makes it a straightforward bike to hand over to a partner, a babysitter, or anyone doing the school run for the first time. The fit range — 150–200 cm, up to 130 kg — covers most adults comfortably, and the cockpit adjusts without tools.

If you want the strongest motor and wireless shifting, the S9i carries more torque and adds Bosch eShift. If a familiar hub-gear feel matters more than stepless shifting, the P5i is worth a look too — all three share the same 190 kg capacity.

Build & technology

The frame and fork are certified to EN 17860 at the P00's full 190 kg gross vehicle weight, with the same longer wheelbase and lower centre of gravity as the rest of the Gen 3 range for steadier handling once loaded. A Suntour suspension fork with 32 mm stanchions smooths out the ride, and Magura hydraulic disc brakes on 180 mm rotors provide dependable stopping power through London's wetter months.

The Enviolo Heavy Duty hub gives a 380% gear range with no fixed steps — twist the shifter and the ratio adjusts continuously, even while stationary at the lights. It runs alongside a Gates Carbon Drive CDX belt, which needs no lubrication or tensioning, and the Bosch Performance Line motor delivers up to 75 Nm of torque with 340% pedal assist.

The compact Bosch Purion 200 display keeps the cockpit uncluttered and connects to the Bosch eBike Flow app, and the PowerPack 545Wh battery gives a range of up to 107 km — a little further than the S9i, thanks to the less power-hungry motor. The Atlas H rear rack is rated to 80 kg and ISO 11243:2023 certified, and the AXA frame lock is keyed alike with the battery.

HSD P00 accessories

The same HSD accessory system — passenger seating, weather protection and everyday cargo — fits the P00. View the full Tern HSD Accessories collection for child seats, rain and sun protection, panniers and racks. Compatibility varies by model and generation, so check with us before ordering, or come in and we'll set the bike up around what you need to carry.

Not sure the P00 is right for you?

If you want the strongest motor and wireless shifting, the S9i is worth comparing — same 190 kg capacity, with 90 Nm of torque and Bosch eShift. If a familiar hub-gear feel appeals more than stepless shifting, look at the P5i. And if you're carrying two children rather than one, the Tern GSD or our HSD hub page are the better starting points.

At Flying Dutchman

The belt-and-hub combination on bikes like the P00 tends to be the one people forget about in the best way — no chain to clean, no gears to fuss over, just get on and ride. First UK stock is due in September; you can reserve one ahead of arrival and we'll let you know as soon as it's in.

Book a test ride at one of our London shops, or come in and we'll talk you through how it compares to the S9i and P5i in person.

Tern HSD P00 Gen 3 FAQs

What's the difference between the HSD P00 and the HSD P5i?

Both use the same 75 Nm Bosch Performance Line motor, the same 190 kg maximum gross vehicle weight, and the same rider fit up to 200 cm and 130 kg. The difference is the hub. The P00 uses an Enviolo Heavy Duty stepless hub — no fixed gears, just a twist shifter and continuous adjustment — with a Gates Carbon Drive belt. The P5i uses a Shimano Nexus 5-speed hub, also with a belt, which gives a more familiar, stepped gear change if you'd rather feel individual gears click in. Both are low-maintenance; it comes down to whether you prefer stepless or stepped shifting.

What is an Enviolo hub, and how does it work on the HSD P00?

The Enviolo Heavy Duty hub fitted to the P00 is a continuously variable transmission — instead of a set number of gears, it adjusts smoothly across a 380% range as you twist the shifter, with no steps in between. You can change the ratio while stationary, which is useful for setting off from a stop on a hill or with a loaded rear rack. It is fully sealed, so there is nothing exposed to road grit or rain, and it pairs with a Gates Carbon Drive belt that needs no oiling.

Is the HSD P00 a good choice if you're not a confident cyclist?

Yes — it's one of the more forgiving bikes in the range for exactly that reason. There's no derailleur to learn, no risk of shifting under load and dropping a chain, and the twist shifter is intuitive from the first ride. Combined with the Bosch Purion 200's simple, thumb-operated controls, it's a bike that's easy to hand to someone else in the household without a lesson first. See our HSD hub page for more on choosing between the Gen 3 models.
