Bastille

The Bastille is the acoustic version of Paris's cleverest folder: full-size 27.5-inch wheels, a fold that takes three movements and under ten seconds, and not a watt of assistance to think about.

It's the lighter, simpler member of the range — a clean belt drive, a Shimano Nexus 7-speed hub you can shift at a standstill, and lights that never need charging. Ride it across town, fold it in seconds, and bring it indoors with you.

Who it's for

The acoustic Bastille suits riders whose journeys are short or flat enough that a motor would be along for the ride, and who'd rather have less to maintain and charge. It's made for the mixed commute — pedal to the station, fold it onto the train, carry on at the other end — and for anyone in a flat with no room to leave a full-size bike. If you like the idea of a bike you can pick up, fold and forget, this is the one.

Build & technology

A Gates-style belt drive keeps the transmission clean and silent, with no chain oil to mark your trousers, and a Shimano Nexus 7-speed internal hub lets you change gear even at a standstill, which is exactly what you want at London lights. Hydraulic disc brakes handle wet descents; aluminium mudguards carry dynamo-powered front and rear lights, so visibility needs no batteries or charging. Continental tyres with reflective sidewalls round it off, and the saddle adjusts with one hand. The frame is built by a partner from the aeronautics industry and the bike assembled in France, largely from standard parts, so servicing and small upgrades are easy. It comes with a transport cover, and a Bastille kickstand and folding-friendly pannier rack (up to two bags, 15 kg) are available when you want to carry more.

Not sure which Bastille?

Want a hand on hills or a longer reach across town? The Bastille E adds a quiet motor and battery in the rear hub for the same fold and ride. Still weighing it up? Our Bastille range page lays the two side by side.

At Flying Dutchman

We keep Bastille at our Camden, Notting Hill and Hackney shops, and the best way to judge a folder is to fold it yourself — so come and do exactly that. Our workshop services them, the standard components make upkeep painless, and the Bastille is eligible for the Cycle to Work scheme. See the full Bastille range.

FAQs

How is the Bastille different from the electric Bastille E?

Same frame, fold and full-size wheels — the acoustic Bastille has no motor, so it's lighter (15.7 kg) and simpler to look after, while the Bastille E adds hub-based assistance.

Can I change gear while stopped?

Yes — the Shimano Nexus 7-speed hub shifts at a standstill, so you can drop into an easy gear while waiting at a light.

Is a non-electric folding bike hard work in the city?

Not on the Bastille. "Acoustic" simply means non-electric, and full-size wheels plus a Shimano Nexus 7-speed hub make it roll easily on the flat-to-rolling terrain of most London commutes; it's the assistance you skip, not the comfort.

What does it come with for the train?

Every Bastille includes a transport cover for train and car travel, and folds small enough (about 82 × 33 × 80 cm) to travel as luggage.
