Bastille E

The Bastille E is the folding e-bike that looks like neither — no bulky battery, no cockpit, no clutter. The motor, battery and controller all live inside the rear hub, so the bike keeps its clean lines and full-size 27.5-inch wheels, and still folds in seconds to come indoors with you.

At 16.7 kg it's light for an e-bike, the assistance is quiet and automatic, and there's nothing to learn: you pedal, and it helps.

Who it's for

The Bastille E is for riders who want the fold and the full-size ride, plus a quiet hand with the work — a longer commute, a few hills, or simply arriving without breaking a sweat. It suits anyone who likes the idea of an e-bike but not the usual weight, screens and bulk: this one stays light, looks like a normal bike, and folds away into a hallway or onto a train like the rest of the range.

Build & technology

The motor sits in the rear hub and delivers progressive, automatic assistance that builds smoothly with your pedalling up to 25 km/h — no throttle, no fuss, just a gentle push when you ask for it, in ECO or SPEED. Because the 210 Wh battery is built into that hub, there's nothing to clip on or carry: you charge the whole bike by plugging it in, like a phone, in about three and a half hours. A belt drive keeps it clean and near-silent, hydraulic disc brakes do the stopping, and lighting is integrated for riding after dark. There's no screen to manage; an optional, deliberately minimal app shows only battery, mode and distance. Like the rest of the range, its frame is built by a partner from the aeronautics industry and the bike assembled in France, and it carries a two-year warranty.

Not sure which Bastille?

Mostly short, flat journeys, or after the lightest, simplest bike? The pedal-power Bastille gives you the same fold without the motor. Want to compare the two properly? Start on the Bastille range page.

At Flying Dutchman

We keep Bastille at our Camden, Notting Hill and Hackney shops, so you can fold the E yourself and feel how light it really is. As an e-bike it's eligible for the Cycle to Work scheme, and your first service at 500 km is on us. Our workshop will look after it for the long run. See the full Bastille range.

FAQs

How far does the Bastille E go on a charge?

Up to 40 km, from a 210 Wh battery built into the rear hub. A full charge takes around three and a half hours.

Do I have to remove the battery to charge it?

No — the battery is sealed inside the hub, so you charge the whole bike by plugging it in, like a phone. There's nothing to carry up the stairs separately.

Does the Bastille E need an app or a screen?

There's no screen on the bike. A simple companion app is available if you want it, showing just battery level, assistance mode and distance — but the bike starts assisting the moment you pedal, with or without it.

Is the Bastille E heavy to carry when folded?

At 16.7 kg it's light for an e-bike, and in the in-between "T" position you roll it along beside you rather than lift it, so trains and short carries are manageable.
