Hiplok's original idea was that the best lock is the one you actually take with you, and the GOLD is that idea at its most serious. It fastens around the waist — adjustable from 30 to 44 inches, and never locked to the body — so a hardened steel chain rides with you instead of swinging off the handlebars or filling a bag.

A 10mm chain and a 12mm hardened shackle give it a Sold Secure Gold rating, which is the level most insurers ask for, and the 85cm locking length is enough for a frame and a stand. The sleeve is water-repellent, removable and washable, which after a London winter is less of a footnote than it sounds.
