Black Iron Horse Ibex

The Black Iron Horse Ibex is the Danish maker's most compact electric cargo trike: three wheels, front-wheel steering and suspension under the box, built to carry two children with the low-speed stability three wheels give you at the lights and the kerb. At 190cm long it takes up little more road than a two-wheeler, which is why it is the one most London families start with.

Compact, and quick to feel at home

The Ibex is the smallest trike Black Iron Horse build, and the most immediately intuitive to ride. It steers through its two front wheels — the arrangement most people already expect — so there is nothing to relearn; you ride away confidently on the first attempt. Three wheels hold it upright at a standstill, which removes the balancing act at junctions with children on board, and the 16-inch front wheels keep the load low and the box close to the ground. Underneath that box sits something most compact trikes go without: suspension, which keeps London's kerbs, setts and sunken drain covers from reaching whoever is up front. At 190cm long and 94cm wide, it stores and filters through traffic more like a large two-wheeler than a box bike.

Built around two children

The Ibex carries two children in the front box — on a bench with two five-point seatbelts, or on the cushioned Family setup for a mix of ages. The box is moulded in Denmark from recycled plastic and rated to 70kg on the bench. Saddle and bars adjust without tools across a 145–201cm rider range, so two parents of different heights can share the school run. Add the weather hood and the front box becomes genuinely all-season — the difference between a fair-weather bike and one that still does the run in February. If a third child is on the horizon, look at the larger Polly alongside it.

Danish-built, made to last

Black Iron Horse have built cargo trikes from precision steel in Denmark for 25 years, sourcing and welding steel in Europe and running every bike through the workshop before it ships. The Ibex uses Shimano's EP6 motor — 85Nm, enough to move a loaded box away from a standstill without drama — with a 418Wh battery and a Shimano Nexus 5-speed hub you can shift even at a standstill, which is exactly when you need it on a loaded trike. Hydraulic disc brakes and a parking brake manage the extra weight, Schwalbe Marathon-family tyres keep punctures rare, and Axa and Busch & Müller lights run off the main battery, wired in from the factory. It is built to be maintained and kept, and our workshop knows these trikes well.

FAQs

How many children can the Black Iron Horse Ibex carry?

Two, in the front box — on a bench with two five-point seatbelts, or on the cushioned Family setup. The bench is rated to 70kg, and children ride low in the box, in front of you and behind the front wheels. For three or more, move up to the Polly.

Does the Ibex steer like the Polly?

No, and it is worth knowing the difference. The Ibex steers through its front wheels — the arrangement most people already know — so it feels natural from the first ride. The Polly and Ox steer from the rear wheel, which turns tighter but takes a ride or two to recalibrate to. If you want the shortest learning curve, the Ibex is the one.

How is the Ibex different from the Polly?

Size and steering. The Ibex is 190cm long, carries two children and steers from the front — the compact, immediately familiar option. The Polly is 225cm, steers from the rear wheel and configures for up to six children. Two children and a small footprint point to the Ibex; more seats point to the Polly.

Is a cargo trike stable — will it tip?

Three wheels keep it planted when you stop and at walking pace, and the suspended box sits the weight low, which is what keeps a loaded trike settled. It does not lean into corners like a two-wheeler or a tilting trike, so you take bends at a considered speed rather than throwing it in. Most riders find that reassuring rather than limiting — but the only real test is a test ride.
