Black Iron Horse Polly electric trike for 4 kids Black Iron Horse Polly electric trike for 4 kids

Black Iron Horse Polly

The Black Iron Horse Polly is the Danish maker's largest electric cargo trike and its dedicated people-carrier: three wheels, rear-wheel steering and a front door, configurable from a family bench up to six children. Its defining feature is that rear-wheel steering, which lets a 419-litre box turn inside its own length while staying as narrow as the smallest trike in the range.

Room for the whole family

The Polly is built around passengers. In Family form it seats a young family on a cushioned bench with a backrest; the Polly 4 adds two seats and four five-point belts; and the Polly 6 runs two facing benches for up to six children. The 419-litre box is among the largest in the class precisely because the steering is at the rear — with nothing steering underneath it, the space goes to the children instead. A front door means children walk in and buckle up themselves rather than being lifted over the side — easier on your back, and quicker every time you set off.

Rear-wheel steering that turns in its own length

Most box trikes steer by pivoting the whole box, so the heavier the load, the heavier the steering. The Polly does the opposite. The two front wheels and the box stay fixed, and you steer the single rear wheel — and three things follow. The steering stays light however many children are aboard; the front wheels stay planted and stable under a full load; and the turning circle is genuinely tight, coming about inside its own 225cm length where a pivot-steer trike has to shuffle back and forth. It is mildly unfamiliar for the first ride or two, since the wheel you are steering is behind you, and then it becomes the thing owners rate most. At 86.5cm wide it stays no broader than the narrowest model in the range, so it clears standard gates and sits comfortably within a cycle lane despite the space inside.

Danish-built, made to last

Black Iron Horse have built cargo trikes from precision steel in Denmark for 25 years, sourcing and welding steel in Europe and moulding the box from recycled Danish plastic. The Polly runs Shimano's EP6 motor at 85Nm — meaningful torque for a bike that might be pulling six children up a hill — with a 418Wh battery and a Shimano Nexus 5-speed hub you can shift even at a standstill — useful when you are pulling away with six children aboard. Hydraulic disc brakes and a parking brake hold it loaded on a slope, Schwalbe Marathon-family tyres keep it rolling, and the Axa and Busch & Müller lights run off the main battery. Every bike passes through the workshop before it ships; ours knows them inside out for the years afterwards.

FAQs

How many children can the Black Iron Horse Polly carry?

Up to six. The Polly 6 runs two facing benches, three across each, with six five-point seatbelts; the Polly 4 seats four; and the Family carries a smaller family on a cushioned bench. For two children in a more compact trike, see the Ibex.

What is rear-wheel steering, and why does Black Iron Horse use it?

Instead of pivoting the whole box to steer — the usual method, which gets heavier as you load it — the Polly keeps the box and front wheels fixed and steers the single rear wheel. The steering stays light whatever the load, the front wheels stay planted, and the turning circle is very tight. The trade-off is a ride or two of recalibration, since the steered wheel is behind you. Owners tend to describe the handling as precise once it clicks.

Will the Polly fit through gates and down a side return?

At 86.5cm it is no wider than the smallest trike in the range and sits within a standard cycle lane, so width is rarely the problem. Length is the thing to plan for at 225cm — measure your storage, your turning space and any dog-leg to the back garden. Tell us the pinch points and we will give you an honest answer.

Is the Polly stable fully loaded?

Yes. Because the front wheels do not steer, they stay planted under load, and the low box keeps the centre of gravity down — the two things that make a loaded trike feel settled rather than top-heavy. It is not a tilting trike, so corners are taken at a measured pace. Three wheels also mean it stands on its own while you load six children in.
