VanMoof S6

The S6 is the VanMoof you picture when you hear the name — the high, straight top tube with the lights built into it, on 27.5-inch wheels. It is the sixth generation of that bike and the first designed entirely under VanMoof’s new ownership, and it rides the way the original promised to: quiet, clean and quick away from the lights, with a Boost Button for the moment you want a shove. A 250-watt front motor and a 487 Wh integrated battery do the work; a three-speed hub shifts itself; and the whole thing is built around keeping itself locked, tracked and hard to steal.

Who it’s for

This is a city bike for the commute and the everyday town journey — not a cargo bike and not a hill-climbing tourer. It suits someone who wants an electric bike that looks like a bike, keeps its tech out of the way, and takes security seriously, which in London is the part that counts. The high-bar frame gives a sportier, more planted feel and suits taller riders — VanMoof puts it at roughly 165 to 210 cm; if stepping over a high top tube isn’t for you, the S6 Open is the same bike in a lower frame.

Build & technology

The 250 W front-hub motor delivers up to 68 Nm and four levels of assist, plus the Boost Button for a short surge on demand, with power easing off at 15.5 mph in line with UK law. The 487 Wh battery is integrated into the frame — part of what keeps the bike so clean — which does mean it charges on the bike rather than lifting out; worth knowing if you’ll be carrying it up to a flat to charge. VanMoof quotes a range of roughly 37 to 93 miles depending on how you ride. The three-speed AutoShift hub is mechanical and changes gear by itself, a deliberate move back to simplicity after earlier electronic shifting. The Control Core ties the electronics together, the Halo lights in the frame show speed and battery at a glance, and hydraulic disc brakes handle the stopping. Security is the headline: a waterproof Kick Lock you engage with your foot, an alarm, anti-theft fixings, on-board location tracking and Apple Find My. A Peak Design phone mount is included.

At Flying Dutchman

The S6 is a bike that makes more sense once you’ve ridden it — the Boost Button and the auto-shifting are easier to feel than to read about. We have it for test rides by appointment at our London shops, keep stock where we can, and can usually get one to you quickly if the colour or frame you want isn’t on the floor. Come in and we’ll set you up, walk you through the security and the app, and let you spend proper time on it.

FAQs

Is VanMoof a safe brand to buy now?

Yes. VanMoof is now part of McLaren Applied, and the S6 is the first bike designed entirely under that ownership — engineered for reliability and backed by a three-year (or 7,500 km) warranty. The self-shifting three-speed hub is mechanical and low-maintenance, and the electronics sit in a single redesigned core. It’s a VanMoof built for the long run.

Can I take the battery out to charge it?

No — the 487 Wh battery is built into the frame, which is part of what gives the S6 its clean look, and it charges on the bike. If you keep your bike somewhere without a nearby socket, that’s worth factoring in. A full charge takes around six and a half hours.

How secure is it against theft in London?

Security is the S6’s strong suit. The Kick Lock engages with a tap of your foot, and the bike tracks its own location and works with Apple Find My, so you have two ways to locate it. No lock makes a bike untheftable, so we’d still pair it with a good independent lock and somewhere sensible to keep it — happy to talk through what that looks like for where you live.
