Riese & Müller Packster2 70 CT

The Packster2 70 is a front-loading cargo bike with a Bosch Cargo Line motor, EPP impact-protection box and cable-controlled steering — the bike most families buy for the school run and then discover handles everything else just as well. It comes in two forms: the standard Packster2 70, with a Suntour front suspension fork, and the full-suspension Packster2 70 CT, which keeps that fork and adds Riese & Müller's Control Technology rear swing arm for the smoothest ride over rough roads. At 249cm overall — 251.5cm for the CT — it is around 15cm shorter than a typical full-size cargo bike and navigates London streets with a composure that longer bikes cannot match. The EPP box is what sets it apart from other R&M front-loaders: an impact-absorbing, fully recyclable material that gives genuine side-impact protection for children, and a secure, weatherproof enclosure for cargo. Internal cable steering gives a tighter turning angle than most bikes its size, and the internal battery keeps weight low and protected from the elements.

Who it's for

This bike is for families doing the school run every day, in all weathers, with children who need to be somewhere on time — and for anyone who needs a serious daily cargo bike that also happens to carry children exceptionally well. Both versions carry up to three children and, once the children are at school, handle a weekly shop, bulky cargo or work kit without modification. The choice between them comes down to your roads and your ride: the standard Packster2 70's front suspension fork already takes the edge off potholes, while the CT's added rear suspension is what keeps rider and passengers settled on longer runs and rougher surfaces with the box fully loaded. If most of your riding is around town, the standard version is all most families need; if you cover longer distances or your route is genuinely rough, the CT is worth the upgrade.

Build & technology

Both versions share the same core. The fully recyclable EPP box — the impact-absorbing material used in cycling helmets — is roughly 70cm long and 60cm wide, holds around 240 litres, and gives genuine side-impact protection. The Bosch Cargo Line motor delivers up to 85Nm fully loaded, with a DualBattery option taking capacity to 1,500Wh. Internal cable steering tightens the turning circle, and the internal battery keeps the centre of gravity low and protected from the weather. The height-adjustable saddle and stem let two adults from 1.50m to 2.00m share the bike without tools. The RX Chip (GPS tracking and a digital alarm) is fitted as standard, with optional Bosch eBike ABS and Magura disc brakes for the wet.

You choose how it shifts. Family and Touring use a chain and derailleur — Shimano CUES and the higher-spec Shimano Deore — keeping the price down with a familiar feel. Vario swaps to an Enviolo stepless hub and Gates carbon belt drive: no fixed gears, just a smooth twist, and almost no maintenance. Automatic adds Enviolo AUTOMATiQ, which shifts for you. Most London families prefer the Vario or Automatic belt-drive builds.

The main difference between the two models is suspension: the standard Packster2 70 has the Suntour front fork with a rigid rear, while the Packster2 70 CT adds R&M's Control Technology rear swing arm for full suspension, in Vario and Automatic builds. The rear carrier takes 27kg on the standard bike, or up to 15kg on the CT.

At Flying Dutchman

We do our own school runs on bikes like this, so what we tell you about the Packster2 70 comes from experience. The most useful thing is to ride it with the box loaded — the reclining bench and the suspension only really make sense once there is weight on board. Come in and we'll talk through whether the standard fork or the full-suspension CT suits your roads and your ride, and set up the buggy and child-seat options while you're here. If you are weighing it up, the Transporter2 65 and Load5 60 are its closest cargo rivals.

FAQs

How many children does the Packster2 70 carry?

Up to three children up to the age of seven, with the appropriate R&M child seats fitted — the usual setup is a double child seat, with the option to add a third, rear-facing seat. With the buggy configuration — half-height side walls and a weather cover — younger children ride safely and comfortably in all conditions. The box holds around 240 litres, and the rear carrier takes up to 27kg on the standard bike (up to 15kg on the CT).

What is the difference between the Packster2 70 and the Packster2 70 CT?

The CT stands for Control Technology — R&M's full-suspension system, which keeps the Suntour front fork of the standard bike and adds a rear swing arm. The standard Packster2 70 has front suspension only, with a rigid rear. On smooth roads the difference is subtle; on London's actual roads — speed bumps, potholes, dropped kerbs — and especially on longer or rougher routes, the CT makes a material difference to rider comfort, cargo stability and overall control. The EPP box, Cargo Line motor and internal cable steering are identical on both. The CT is slightly longer (251.5cm versus 249cm), and its rear carrier is rated to 15kg rather than 27kg. If most of your riding is around town, the standard version is all most families need; for longer distances or rougher roads, we think the CT is worth it.

Can both parents ride the Packster2 70?

Yes. The saddle and stem are height-adjustable without tools, so two adults of different heights — anywhere from about 1.50m to 2.00m tall — can share the bike comfortably for the morning and afternoon school run. This applies to both versions and is one of the practical details that makes a real difference in daily use.
