The Multitinker2 is our best-selling R&M family bike at Flying Dutchman — a compact 20-inch wheel longtail that carries two children on a long rear platform and fits into spaces a box bike cannot. At 188.7cm overall it is the shortest bike in the R&M cargo range, barely longer than a standard bike, yet it is rated to 200kg gross with up to 70kg on the rear rack. It comes in four versions: the FAMILY, which arrives set up for carrying children, and the touring, vario and automatic, all three built around the Bosch Cargo Line motor with a different approach to gearing.

Who it's for

This is the bike for London families who want serious carrying capacity without the footprint of a box bike. The compact 20-inch frame is meaningfully shorter and narrower than a front-loader — easier to store at home, easier to navigate in traffic, and easier to live with every day. Most families add the weather protection, and it is worth knowing how the two halves differ: the lower panels stay in place, shielding children's feet and doubling as extra storage, while the top cover folds away once the children are dropped off. The seat position adjusts easily to riders from 1.50m to 2.00m, so it also suits families sharing the school run between two adults of different heights.

Build & technology

The 20-inch wheels are central to what makes the Multitinker2 work in London — they keep the centre of gravity low, make the bike easier to handle at low speed when loaded, and hold the overall length to 188.7cm without sacrificing the ride quality you would expect from an R&M. The FAMILY runs the Bosch Performance Line PX motor with a Shimano Nexus 5-speed hub gear. The touring, vario and automatic all use the Bosch Cargo Line, Bosch's dedicated cargo motor — the touring with a Microshift 10-speed derailleur, the vario with an Enviolo continuous hub and Gates carbon belt drive, and the automatic with Enviolo Automatic shifting on the same belt drive. All four share the Bosch PowerTube 625 battery, a Suntour Mobie 34 suspension fork with 80mm of travel, Magura disc brakes and a Supernova mini 2 Pro headlight with main and dipped beam. R&M's RX Chip, which brings GPS location and a digital motion alarm, is fitted as standard on the touring, vario and automatic. The FAMILY arrives with the Family Kit already fitted — safety bar, padded shelf and wheel guard — so it is ready to carry two children from the first ride.

The Multitinker2 has 20-inch wheels and a shorter frame — easier to store and more manoeuvrable in tight spaces. The Multicharger3 has 28-inch wheels, rides faster and covers ground more efficiently on longer commutes. If storage space is limited or you primarily ride short urban distances, the Multitinker2 is the stronger choice. For longer rides or faster commuting, the Multicharger3.

The Multitinker2 FAMILY arrives with the Family Kit already fitted — the safety bar rail system, padded shelf and wheel guard — so it can carry two children without anything else being added. It runs the Bosch Performance Line PX motor with a Shimano Nexus 5-speed hub gear. Compatible child seats are available separately for younger children, and the accessory pack varies a little between build years, so we will confirm exactly what is fitted to the bike in stock when you come in.

The rear platform is rated for 70kg, with the passenger configuration approved for two children. For context, that comfortably covers two children through primary school age and beyond.
