Bike43 Mid

The Bike43 Mid is the middle of the range and, for a lot of London families, the natural place to land: room for two or three children, a length of 186 cm that's still well short of a box bike, and the same easy, normal-bike handling the range is known for. It's the Short with about 13 cm more rear deck – built on the very same modular aluminium frame – so there's space for a longer bench, an extra seat, or simply more elbow room as children grow. With the option of Bosch's stronger Performance Line PX motor and a larger battery, it's as comfortable on a hilly cross-town commute as on the school run.

Who it's for

The Mid is for families who've outgrown "one child and the shopping" and need everyday capacity for two or three – without going up to a full box bike or surrendering the hallway. It suits the household doing drop-off and pick-up daily, then carrying on to work on the same bike, and the parent who wants headroom to add a seat rather than buy again in two years. Where two adults share the bike, the height-adjustable handlebar makes the handover quick. And if you started on a Short, the Mid is where that frame naturally extends to.

Build & technology

The Mid uses Bike43's modular aluminium frame – designed in-house, assembled in Brussels, 7-year frame warranty – set to its longer configuration for 13 cm of extra rear deck. You can specify the Bosch Performance Line (75 Nm) or step up to the Performance Line PX (90 Nm) with a battery up to 800 Wh for longer days and heavier loads. Two 20-inch wheels keep the centre of gravity low and the bike composed when full; a Shimano Nexus internal hub shifts at a standstill and shrugs off maintenance, with a Gates carbon belt drive available as a no-oil alternative. The patented Footbox carries the youngest child's feet under the saddle, the bench pivots open like a car door so children climb in without you bending double, and child seats, footrests and a rain canopy complete the back end. A suspension fork, hydraulic disc brakes and integrated lights come as part of the bike, and the height-adjustable handlebar drops down so it stores upright when the day's done.

Not sure which Bike43?

Mostly carrying one child, and tight on space? The Bike43 Short is the same frame, 13 cm shorter. Regularly three children, or three on the horizon? The Bike43 Long is purpose-built for it. Still deciding between a longtail, a box bike and a trike? Start with our family bike guide.

At Flying Dutchman

We stock Bike43 at Flying Dutchman and ride these bikes on our own school runs, so come and try the Mid loaded – ideally with the children – at our Camden, Notting Hill or Hackney shops. Our workshop looks after them, your first service at 500 km is included, and the Mid qualifies for the Cycle to Work scheme. Browse the full Bike43 range.

FAQs

How many children can the Bike43 Mid carry?

Two or three. It's 186 cm long with about 13 cm more rear deck than the Short, and the patented Footbox frees space by tucking the youngest child's feet under the saddle – so a longer bench or an extra seat fits comfortably. For one child in a tighter space, the Bike43 Short shares the same frame; for three as the everyday norm, the Bike43 Long is built around it. We'll set the seating up around your children's ages at Flying Dutchman.

What's the difference between the Bike43 Mid and Short?

They're the same modular aluminium frame in two lengths. The Short is 173 cm and best for one or two children; the Mid is 186 cm, with roughly 13 cm more rear deck for two or three. Because the frame is shared, a Short can be extended into a Mid later. The Mid can also take Bosch's stronger Performance Line PX motor and a larger battery. A test ride at Flying Dutchman in London makes the difference obvious.

Which Bosch motor should I choose on the Mid?

Two options: the Performance Line (75 Nm), ample for most London riding, and the Performance Line PX (90 Nm) with a battery up to 800 Wh, worth having for long hills, longer distances or consistently heavy loads. Both are part of Bosch's well-supported drive ecosystem. Tell us your route and how much you'll carry and we'll point you to the right one.

Is the Bike43 Mid suitable for London?

Yes – it's one of the reasons families choose it. At 186 cm it stays far shorter than a box bike, parks in ordinary spaces and stands upright for storage in a flat or hallway, while the low centre of gravity from its 20-inch wheels keeps it steady through traffic and at the lights. Add the rain canopy and it's a year-round bike for the British weather. Come and ride it loaded at Flying Dutchman.
