Key features

Traditional Dutch Bike

The Tour Populair is a lovely, classic Dutch bike. It has a host of features that make it endearing and characterful, including hand-painted designs on the frame, and hand-stitched grips on the handlebars. The halogen headlamp and aged Brooks leather saddle further add to the nostalgic quality of this traditional opafiets. Underneath all of the retro styling lies a truly modern city bike. Shimano Nexus hub gears, brakes, and dynamo show that reliable quality is still top of Gazelle’s list when designing a modern classic. The steel frame will probably outlive the rider, as will the steel rims and heavy-duty chain.

Our take on the Gazelle Tour Populair step-over

Genuine Classic Dutch City Bike

You might wonder why the largest bicycle manufacturer in the Netherlands only makes one traditionally-styled bike, and the answer is simple: the Tour Populair gets the formula right, so why expend energy on anything else?

Gazelle have been in the bike trade since 1892, and they received their Royal Warrant of Appointment on their centenary (which coincided with the production of their eighth millionth bicycle). With this in mind, it is safe to say that they know a thing or two about building a decent set of wheels!

Gazelle’s Heritage

As it states on their website, the Tour Populair is Gazelle’s heritage; the frame was inspired by the English bicycles that they initially imported, and the rest of the styling and geometry were carefully refined over decades of development. However, the bike’s retro aesthetics belie the modern components that keep everything running reliably. Utility cycling began with bikes like this, and it is a credit to their design that they are still just as practical today as they were a hundred years ago. Of course, features like dynamo lighting, hub gears, and weather-proof components all add up to bring this bike well and truly into the 21st century, but there is undoubtedly a special and timeless quality to the Tour Populair that is rarely found on modern city bikes.

All in all, the Tour Populair is a traditionally styled but truly modern city bike. Taking the best from their past and their present, Gazelle have done a fine job in bringing the two together.
