Our take on the Gazelle Cabby

The Cabby is Gazelle’s answer to family transport – in essence, it is their bakfiets. Gazelle’s engineers have taken their highly practical and distinctly-Dutch approach to the design, shedding weight where possible, and building in neat little innovations all over the place. The result is a comfortable, easy-riding, and simple-to-use family transporter with exceptionally well-considered adaptations for Maxi-Cosi carriers and Yepp child seats.

The frame is made of steel, which is surprising given the bike’s relatively light weight; at a mere 38kgs, the Gazelle Cabby is by far our lightest bakfiets family bike! The light weight translates to easy handling and more manageable manoeuvrability. First-time riders are often surprised at how easily the Cabby rides.

The Gazelle Cabby ticks a lot of the standard ‘Dutch bike’ boxes as well; for instance, it has a dynamo-powered front light, a long and strong rear carrier, a full chaincase to protect the chain, a pair of natty coat guards, a built-in ringlock, Shimano IM80 rollerbrakes, Schwalbe tyres, Nexus 7-speed hub gears, full mudguards, and the extensive use of stainless steel hardware in order to allow the bike to live outdoors without the encroachment of rust.

One-size-fits-all is the name of the game with the Cabby, and the 49cm frame can accommodate riders down to about 155cm in height. By raising the seat post, taller riders are also catered for, and the clever ergonomic relationship between the headtube and the seat post means that the bike fits everyone equally well.

In addition to the incredibly security offered by the ringlock, one nice extra security feature on the Cabby is the laser-cut frame number that is clearly visible on both the left and right sides of the bike. By making the frame number visible and obvious, the bike is so easily identifiable that thieves are deterred from targeting it.

Standard accessories like waterproof rain tents and box covers are available for the Gazelle Cabby, as well as adapters for Maxi-Cosi seats. The Flying Dutchman shop also offers a range of upgrades and additional accessories, such as brighter LED dynamo lights, or durable panniers for carrying extra cargo on the rear rack.
